Alcoholism
Alcohol is a form of depressant in the central nervous system, meaning that is slows down dynamic functions which can result in slurred speech, unsteady movements, hallucinations, the inability to react quickly, reducing an individual’s ability to think rationally and distorts the individual’s judgment.
Although alcohol is classified as a depressant, the amount of alcohol consumed determines the type of effect it has on the individual. Most people drink for a stimulant effect which would help them relax. Although if an individual consumes more than the body can handle then the individual will start to feel the alcohols depressant effect, which can result in them loosing coordination and control.
Many adolescents may feel pressured to drink or experiment with alcohol when at social gatherings. Some individuals consume alcohol as a way to cope with the daily stresses of life such as school, work, marital distress or even illness. Through this they may become a substitute for satisfying a craving.
